ENG 105 D1 MWF 11:15 AM -12:05 PM MM 204 Adina Sanchez-Garcia Office Hours: MWF 12:15-1:15 PM and by appointment ECC Building #103 Phone: (305)284-4673 Email: [email protected] COURSE DESCRIPTION This second course in the first-year sequence builds on the work done in ENG 105 by asking students to focus more specifically on textual materials. While some of these materials are literary, the course defines literature broadly to include the development of close and critical reading of texts, increased ability to use textual evidence to support an argument or interpretation, appropriate incorporation of secondary sources, and increased sophistication and complexity at all levels of discourse. Rocket ships and aliens? Distant lands in distant times? Alternate worlds? Dystopian/utopian fiction? How do we define science fiction? In this particular section of ENG 106, we will be using science fiction texts to understand how they work; how we can, through this analysis, define the genre; and, ultimately, how writing as exploration can be applied to other genres and other disciplines. REQUIRED TEXTS AND MATERIALS Masterpieces: The Best Science Fiction of the Twentieth Century (Edited by Orson Scott Card) Writing Analytically , Fifth Edition, David Rosenwasser and Jill Stephen (WA) Various critical readings (on Blackboard) College dictionary and thesaurus Notebook (for reading journal and class notes) Folders and flashdrive to save ALL work WORKING GUIDELINES You will be writing several assignments throughout the semester which will build on the work
