Fist Draft Xu Yue Xu Margaret E. Haun, Ph.D. English 105 U1 1 February 2010 In Deborah Tannen’s article, “The Roots of Debate in Education and the Hope of Dialogue,” the author explores the argument culture in education of the western world. This culture has existed since the time of ancient Greeks and still has a great influence on modern education system. It is a legacy of the agonistic heritage, widely accepted by society and an easy way to do. But in fact, it is not a good way to use this method so widely. It will become the gap to the truth and may be a disadvantage to society since there is not so much simply right and wrong in this world. It limited the depth of thinking people can go into, debating is not always the best choice and sometime this culture will even changes a person’s real thought. One reason the debate format is so widely used is that it is so easy to set up. In high school, it is easy for teachers to judge students’ participation from the noise and excitement of students, but the truth which a lot of teacher have not notice is that the students are not focus on the connotation of the debate and they state their idea in a really unreasonable way .
