2 MAE 142 Matrix and Vector Definitions A m-by-n matrix is a rectangular arrangement of numbers with m rows and n columns. A matrix with the same number of rows and columns is called a square matrix. Vectors are special matrices that have only one row (row vector) or one column (column vector). A matrix with only one row and one column is called a scalar .
