Astronomy 1002: Planet Hunting with the Systemic Console What: You will find a planet using the Systemic Console, a user interface allowing amateur astronomers to find extrasolar planets using real radial velocity (RV) datasets. We will only utilize its most basic features. Get your fits into Ben by Tuesday December 1st (with some leniency). Why: It helps us to understand planet formation and what kinds of planets are out there. And who knows? If you refute a previous model and find a better one, there might be a publication with your name on it! Nonetheless, you get 1% extra credit for sending Ben a decent RV fit. Procedure: After opening the Console, it can take anywhere from 1 minute to several days to do an orbital fit. So pick a system that looks easy unless you are daring! 1. Download the Console at http://www.ucolick.org/~smeschia/unstable/Welcome.html . Useful tutorials can be found on Greg Laughlin's website: www.oklo.org . 2.
