Denver International Airport 2 Baggage - Handling System Summary Situation Analysis Until 1970, Denver had the Stapleton Airport that had managed to accommodate an ever- growing number of airplanes and passengers. In 1980, Denver’s Economic situation grew and expanded consequent to booms in the oil, real estate and tourism industries. Stapleton in Denver was not enough and its limitations interrupted connection times that are important to maintain operations. The Denver International Airport was considered one of the biggest projects in airport’s construction in the USA. It was a build designed project, it means it was going to be built at the time it was been designed. The airport extent over 53 square miles, twice the city of Manhattan, has 3 parallel North South runways, 2 parallel East – West runways, and a room for a total of 12 runways. The case focused basically in the automation of the baggage handling system that was built by BAE Automated System. This company was chosen because the wide experience they had implementing baggage – handling technology on small scales. The baggage system was maybe the principal value of this new airport. It was going to be an “Integrated Automated Baggage Handling System”, designed to distribute all baggage automatically. There were several problems in the process that did not let the airport to start its operation. The delay was an expensive lesson for the airport and airlines. In the end, the automatic baggage system offered no promises productivity. This is a case that will be useful for future airports, cities, and airlines. The problems related to the case will be useful especially when investors are seeking as a major player on luggage distribution system.
