Project Management and Virtual Teams
A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service or result .
PMBOK guide, 2008)
. Project Management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and
techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements.(
Pg, 6). It must also follow a
process that leads to sound decision making and creates a high level of trust and accountability
with all involved in the implementation (Motiwalla, 2012).
It is management, but five
characteristics make it unique: responsibility without authority, its source of power, project
transience, the observation that you get what you get, and the need for specialized tools and
techniques ( Hallows, 2005). Between the tools and techniques, the good administration of
resources is a part of the good management.
Today, the Human Resources are not available just in the same city, or in the same country. The
Human Resources are available in the world. A project can have resources in different states
and different countries. The Project Manager will need to have a very good strategy to manage
the team without causing any problems to any member.
The Manager will have a difference of 10 – 12 hours, from United States to India, for example.
In this case, the Manager will have to schedule really well the meetings to work with the people
there without affecting too much his/their hours. This is what is called Virtual Teams.
A virtual team is a group of individuals who work across time and space using communication
technologies. Team members might all work for the same company in the same country, or they
might include employees as well as independent consultants, suppliers, or even volunteers
providing their expertise from around the globe (
This methodology will save
time and money to the company because the resources will be working 24 hours in different parts
of the world.
I have found three sources that companies should know review about Virtual teams.
