Chapter 1 Homework Questions 1. Define a LAN, WAN, and a MAN. A LAN connection is a network confined to a local area. For example : a home or school. A WAN is a network in a wide range area. For example : the world; the internet is a WAN. A MAN connection is a network that covers a city or ‘metropolitan’ area. 2. List and define the five layers of the TCP/IP Model. - The Physical layer is the lowest on the model. It contains protocols that the computer uses to distribute information to other hardware devices in the network. It involves the actual structure and details of the core network. - The data link layer are where the ‘technologies’ (Ethernet, Token Ring…) function. Tasks include establishment, addressing, control, and accessibility to the medium (or cables). - The next layer is the internetwork layer. This layer routes messages (or information packets) through the network by a gateway or a router. Packets are sent by this layer to the data link layer for transmission. - Next in line is the host-to-host transport layer.
