LAB Week 2 Questions Action 1 : What is the latency in ms of an email message leaving ABC network and arriving at XYZ network given the propagation time is 50ms with a transmission time of 30ms while given a queing time of 10ms and a processing delay of 5ms. The latency of this email message would be 95ms. Action 2 : Describe how you would present this quality of service metric above to the VP of Information systems with your recommendations for improvement given a transmission impairment in your network. I want to efficiently provide quality guaranteed connections for your company. At the moment, you have a small transmission impairment within the network. There is a transmission delay of 95 ms. Technically; a delay of 1ms is considered an ‘impairment’. Even a reasonable delay, lets say 200 ms, is not inherently an impairment. 30 to 100 milliseconds is the typical minimum delay for a broadband internet connection.

To guarantee service quality of high-speed connections, we have in development an intelligent impairment-aware routing system, which automatically considers high-speed transmission impairment. Although there are some impairments, such as background noise, which are beyond control of the network operator. Studies have shown that distortion and bandwidth overload are the main sources of customer complaints, which I can assure you; there are no problems in those areas at this time. Let me put it into perspective; the proverbial "blink of an eye" lasts for one tenth of a second. A millisecond is one thousandth of a second…so you will still receive your information in the blink of an eye....
