Mental toughness Mental toughness is a difference in mental skills between elites and non-elite athletes. This concept has become increasingly famous, gaining support from various research professionals in the past decade. Through the identification and ranking of key components of this concept, athletes have defined mental toughness as bearing a developed psychological or natural edge that enable the athletes to cope with the requirements of training and competition better than their opponents. For an athlete to become successful, he must have the capacity to cope with the several demands of training, lifestyle and competition. An athlete has to be consistent more than his opponents, besides, he must stay focused, be determined and confident. Further the athlete must have the ability to exercise control over pressure. Besides this definition, Jones et al (2002) identified twelve distinct attributes that relates to the explanations given by the athletes on mental toughness. Jones et al. (2002) ranked these attributes in their order of significance, they include: bouncing back from set-backs of performance due to increased drive to succeed; bearing unshakable self- belief in an individuals’ capacity to meet the competition goals; becoming focused on the activity
