1 Summary of Politics 1020E Lecture: Fascism (concluded) and Feminism (November 22, 2011) The twenty-second lecture begins with Adolph Hitler’s Nazism, which Ball and Dagger characterize as ‘fascism plus racism’. Hitler claims that the German people must defeat its enemies, including Jews, Communists, and Liberals. The people need a strong, dominant, charismatic leader whose authority should be unrestricted. Hitler emphasizes a ‘blood and soil’ nationalism and a claim for expansion by appeal to the need for ‘Lebensraum’ or ‘living space’. The Nazi ideology uses a racist form of social Darwinism. This helped to justify its policy of extermination of European Jews. Amazingly, thousands of non-Jews risked their livelihoods and their lives to save Jews during this period. These people are commemorated in the ‘Avenue of the Righteous Among the Nations’ at Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem.
