AST 101 (9/29)  17:58 Greek Astonomy Modern science traces its roots to the ancient greeks They developed a tradition of trying to understand nature without using supernatural  explanations  They continually debate and challenged each others work They constructed conceptual models of the universe These models aimed to predict nature They used mathematics to give precision to their ideas The are 5 planets visible with the naked eye Mercury Venus Mars  Jupiter Saturn Mercury and Venus are always seen near the sun Mars, Jupiter and Saturn can be seen near to or away from the sun Planets oribit in the ecliptic plane Planets appear to lie on the celestial sphere They appear in the constellations of the zodiac Planets rise in the east and set in the west Suppose you observe Jupiter at the same time for a few months Because Jupiter orbits the Sun, its posistion realative to the background stars will
