Donald Cooper Week 5 Reading Response Sarah In the article “Roman Empire, Ara Pacis,” is about how Rome is going to put the Ara Pacis, which belonged to Caesar Augustus, in a museum. There is a lot of history and politics involved with the Ara Pacis. The Ara Pacis was used to honor Caesar Augustus for “pacifying” Gaul and Spain. After Rome fell to barbarians the Ara Pacis was broken apart and spread around. When Mussolini came to power he reassembled it and used it as a symbolic symbol of his power. The Ara Pacis showed that he resembled the new Caesar and he even went out of his way to show the piece to Hitler. After the fall of the Fascist government, now the Ara Pacis is a symbol for the modernization of Spain. After heated debate about whether or not the Ara Pacis should be in the museum and next to what art works, construction of the Ara Pacis started in 2003 and was finished that year in September.
