CH 2: DEFINING ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATION 4 APPROACHES TO ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATION Communication as information transfer Information-transfer approach – metaphoric pipeline which information flows from one person to another Language allows us to transfer thoughts, feelings from1 person to another Words contain those thoughts and feelings Sees communication as a tool that people use to accomplish objectives One-way communication used to impress and influence others Miscommunication occurs when no message is receieved or message receieved is not what the sender intended Information overload Amount of information to be processed Rate at which info presents itself Complexity of processing the information Distortion Effects of noise on the receiver’s ability to process the message Semantic – different meaning for sender & receiver
