Holly Beilin TSEL Chapter 9: Images, Representations, and Accounts March 3 1. Why do we rely on appearances? Appearances- we need to know what to expect from people and things when we are in an unfamiliar situation; we deal with many people we will never get to know very well but we must determine how they are likely to act toward us 2. What are images? Why are they consequential? How are they social (or dependent on more than an individual)? Image- strategically crafted impressions made with the aim to influence other’s opinions Consequential images- our lives can depend on the images we craft because others decide how to treat us and we decide how to treat them based on appearances Social images- we create this reliance on images in interaction, therefore images which others use to make inferences about our character are social creations 3. How is the ability to create images related to inequality?
