A couple important asides Remember that the earth’s surface… Is nearly flat relative to  diameter of earth:  deepest  point in the ocean to highest  mountain is ~ 20 km,  compared to >12,000 km  diameter (0.2%) ~11,000 m below sea level ~9,000 m above sea level

Earth’s internal structure To understand surface, we must look underneath... Earth is composed of multiple layers, sorted by density stratification density = mass/volume (D=M/V) The  Core  is the most dense layer of the earth Solid inner core of iron (& nickel), D ~ 13 g/cm 3 Outer liquid core of iron (& nickel, oxygen, sulfur), D ~  10 g/cm 3
