SLEEP FOR SUCCESSSleep for SuccessWhat happens when a college student is under pressure to fit into a 24-hour period:socializing, going to class, studying, and working all while consuming caffeinated beverages tokeep going? They do not get enough sleep and this lack of sleep will lead to low academicperformance. With all the stress of accomplishing everything a college student is responsible for,it is understandable why they would sacrifice sleep. A college students’ priorities are not going tobe putting the rest of their mind and bodies needs first, second, or even third. In order to helpimprove a college students’ academic performance, they need to be encouraged to get adequatesleep that will in turn improve their mood, energy level, ability to focus, and learn.The overall mood of a college student sets the stage for how their day will go. If theyhave not had enough sleep, then they are going to be overextended and irritable. According to anarticle in the Journal of American College Health, researchers have found that students’ that aresuffering from bad sleep habits are more likely to be stressed, exasperated, and overall are nothappy with their life (Buboltz, Brown, & Soper, 2001, p. 131). This overextension and irritabilitywill cause them to struggle in both personal and academic relationships. When friends are treatedpoorly, they will not want to stay friends. When instructors, including the education they provide,are treated poorly, they will give the student a lower grade. Another statement in the articlementioned above, reports that the effects of sleep deprivation will have a major impact on astudent’s success in school (Buboltz, Brown, & Soper, 2001, p. 131).
