COT 3100-Applications of Discrete Structures   Basic Information:   Semester: Fall 2010  Classroom Location: TUR 2336 Class times: M T W F  2 nd  Period (9:30am – 10:45am).  Pre-requisites: MAC 2311, MAC 2233 or MAC 3472  Instructor: Mohamad Tarifi        Email: [email protected]        Office: CSE E.         Office Hours: M T W 11:00am – 12:00  or by appointment.  Teaching Assistant: TBA  Course Description Applications of Discrete Structures is a survey of the basic mathematics of discrete events or entities.  The student will learn mathematical tools central to computer science and engineering.  The course  places an emphasis on rigorous reasoning, critical thinking, and analysis. Some of the topics covered include: (1)  Fundamentals of Mathematical Reasoning propositional and predicate logic, mathematical proof techniques and strategies.   (2)   Elements of Discrete Structures: Sets, Sequences, Summations, Functions, Graphs and Trees. (3)  B asics of Combinatorial Analysis and Probability Permutations, Combinations, Counting, Discrete Probability Theory. (3)   Introduction to Algorithms Algorithm Design and Analysis, Computational Complexity. This is an important course that will give you the mathematical foundation for much of computer  science and engineering including data structures and algorithms, theoretical computer science,  databases, networks, operating systems, programming languages, compilers, artificial intelligence,  graphics, and more.
