The Joint Tool The Joint Tool: the tool used to create bones Bones are automatically connected to each other as you create them Joints: non-rendering helper nodes that generate a parent-child hierarchy when they are built. So when a parent joint rotates, all of its children rotate around the parents pivot point

Skeletons – Deformation The second purpose of Maya skeletons is to dynamically deform the model. Instead of obvious bone placement we have a blending between effect of each joint. That way, you can have appendages that span across different joints. Skin Binding: the ability to parent some of an objects components (such as vertices or CVs) to one joint, and the remaining components to a different joint.

Skeletons – Skin Binding Skin Binding Example: In order to bend at the elbow, a single arm model should have about half of its CVs associated with the shoulder joint, and the other half (those below the elbow) associated with the elbow joint. When the elbow rotates, the geometry will be appropriately deformed.
