ENG 203:SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE Governance in General A formal structure for setting goals and regulating the activities of an entity – a nation, a corporation, a club etc. For an organization or project, governance typically includes: Establishing strategy, goals and objectives Evaluating alternatives for achieving them Creating a governance structure with roles and responsibilities Allocating resources Approving plans, schedules, and metrics Reviewing progress and outcomes; directing necessary changes For architecture, governance is essential to both near term implementation and long term maintenance, application, and evolution: Needed to ensure high level commitment, balanced consideration of the needs of all stakeholders, and sound implementation planning Needed to ensure an initially high quality architecture is not eroded over time under the pressure of events Lack of adequate governance is routinely cited as a root cause of failure or disappointment in architecture efforts 01/20/12 John M.
