ENG 203:SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE 01/20/12 4 Quality Attributes John M. Borky 2009 - all rights reserved QAts deal with nonfunctional requirements: Overall system characteristics such as good design practices, robustness (tolerance for change) and reliability Most basic architecture tenets fall in this category QAts can be quantitative, e.g., required values for reliability and availability, but many are qualitative: Required values for Mean Time Between Failures, Operational Availability (as a function of total time), etc. are quantitative Openness, modularity and loose coupling are based on conformity to defined principles QAts are intimately bound up in decisions about system design and evolution: Provide data about the overall impact and consequences of individual changes, especially in evaluating alternatives Provide overall insight into technical integrity of the architecture resulting from cumulative changes over time
