Unformatted text preview: Physics 331 Instructor: Xiaodong Xu Office: B‐437 Office Hour: 3‐4 pm Thursday Lecture Time: Room A118, 9:30‐10:20 am, Tuesday Labs: Room B260 Lab Time: Section AD: 1:30‐4:20, Monday Section AA: 1:30‐4:20, Tuesday Section AB: 1:30‐4:20, Wednesday Section AC: 1:30‐4:20, Friday Requirements: Labs: There are 8 options and you must complete 6 of them. First and Required lab: Speed of Light (SOL). Lab Reports: You must submit lab reports (according to the format specified in the "Written Report" section in the Lab Practices handout) for SOL and at least 5 other labs. SOL is due in one week and the others are due in two weeks after the lab is completed. Last submission day – Wed, (12/07). Specific: Your SOL report is due by 2:00PM one week after you complete the lab. Your other lab reports must are due by 2:00 PM two weeks after you complete the lab. All late submissions will be penalized @ 5% per late day, with a weekend counting as 1 day. Submissions will not be accepted after 2:00 PM on Wednesday (12/07/011). Pre‐Lab‐Report: Except SOL, you must submit at least five pre‐lab‐reports. This report is due when you come into the lab. Pre‐lab‐report is a one page write up, including your understanding of the purpose of the experiment, the outline of experimental procedures, the physical quantities you are to going to measure directly, the physical quantities you will derive from the measurements. Delay of submission will be penalized as zero points. Exam: one in‐class exam to be given on material covered in lectures (12/06/011). Open notes and open book. Bring a (pocket) calculator. Write solutions on the exam paper. Grading: Each lab report, graded on 50, is worth 15% of the total grade except SOL worth 10%. Exam is worth 10%. 85% of your final grade will be the submitted lab reports. Pre‐lab reports, graded on 10, worth 5% of the total grades. Adjustments will be made for any difference in average scores on a given experiment or exam. These 5 Mac OSX programs and a more complex Fabry‐ Perot simulation program are also on a computer in the optics lab. 18 October Fraunhofer diffraction from single slits, multiple slits, and rectangular apertures. Fresnel diffraction from single slits and straight edges. Hecht pgs 282‐8, 443‐66, 497‐507 and posted simulations. 25 October Diffraction gratings, lasers, and holograms. Hecht pgs 476‐81 (assigned for concave grating experiment), 586‐97 (explains laser operation including modes measured in Fabry‐Perot experiment), and 623‐39 (assigned for holography experiment).
