A bright moon is right above her head. Listening to the soothing sounds of the sea
she thinks of the motion of the earth and the moon. Alice knows that the earth’s
center is about 6400 kilometers below her feet, and the distance between the moon’s
center and the earth’s center is about 380,000 kilometers at the moment. She also
knows that the earth is 81.3 times as massive as the moon. Is the center of mass of
the earthmoon system above Alice’s head or below her feet? Haw far is it from her?
