The wife Mathilde Loisel was a greedy woman who believed that only wealth and jewels will bring her happiness. The husband Monsieur Loisel wasthe opposite of his wife, he was a generous man who loved his humble life as a clerk. Mathilde and her husband go beyond measures just so she could feel beautiful and wealthy for just one night because her appearance and being admired by the upper-class society meant so much to her. However, Mathilde soon learned that wealth does not bring you true happiness. Maupassant uses character, imagery, and setting to describe how greed can cause your situationto turn out worse than you thought it was before. Throughout the story Maupassant used descriptions of imagery so that we could understand the characteristics of the characters better and their lives. Maupassant describes the settings from Mathilde point of view, it helped us to further delineate Mathilde character. Mathilde was described as a young, beautiful, and charming woman that longed to live a luxurious life and to be accepted by the upper-class society. Although Mathilde was beautiful onthe outside the ungratefulness she had towards her life and husband made her Ill-favored.
