Introduction Statistics is the science of learning from data . Data can be thought of as the result or outcome of some experiment. Statistical sleuthing involves carefully examining data to answer questions of interest. Answers accompanied by measure of uncertainty – based on a probability model. ex: ﬂipping coins to decide which subjects get which treatment Stat 3022 (Section 001) Chapter 1 September 7, 2011 2 / 9
Study Question : Did a bank discriminatorily pay higher starting salaries to men than to women? Data : Beginning salaries for 32 men, 61 women. All skilled, entry-level employees hired between 1969–1977. Perform exploratory data analysis using graphical and numerical summaries of the data. Stat 3022 (Section 001)
