Earth’s System and the planet’s life Life on Earth is due to interaction between: (1) Lithosphere (2) Cryosphere (3) Atmosphere (4) Hydrosphere The “Earth System” is comprised of these physical components interacting with the (5) Biosphere Earth’s matter is made up of solids, liquids and gases. These states of matter on Earth are found within the four main spheres. A fifth, the biosphere, is special to this scenario and we will return to that in a moment. The Solid phases of matter are represented on Earth by the lithosphere and the cryosphere. The latter consists of all solid water: massive icebergs floating in the cold northern and southern oceans, alpine glaciers found at the tops of mountains, and the massive ice sheets at the Earth’s poles. The lithosphere is the hard parts of Earth. It largely consists of rocks and minerals. The lithosphere is divided into three parts: the crust (the part we live on), the mantle, and the core. The three most abundant elements of the lithosphere are 35% Iron, 30% Oxygen,
