From 14th to 17 th century, new era of development came true in all fields of life in Europe. This period of time was called the renaissance. That development included science, geography, astronomy, physics, and art. However, there was sings of discrimination and racism prevailing among European people at the time. It wan not a complete civilization or civilized thoughts yet. Throughout the art works of Othello and Candide, this paper is to show how the European people were racists and the relations between “self” and “other” in the eyes of Europe in terms of color, religion, and end ethnicity. The paper will explain whether both authors of these two art works are racists or they are just fair and showing their real society at that time. The paper is to pint out the tragic ending of the stories and which one is more effective and influencer on the audience. In general, the paper will show the kind of racism that was the mainstream among the people of Europe, a thing that made writers like Shakespeare and Voltaire criticize their society regarding the discrimination of foreigners, particularly Asians and Africans. The paper will provide evidences from Othello and Candide to prove that racism against the different colors, religions, and races. One of the prominent art works that shows the racism of Europe in the era of renaissance is Othello by Shakespeare. Othello is a black man who is originally not a European person, but an African man who becomes a military leader in Venice and falls in love with Desdemona who is a noble lady. The race of Othello makes Iago does not accept him as a military leader and tries to get him in trouble by making him think that his wife Desdemona is cheating on him. Othello appears in the play as a “black 1
moor”. Such word “moor” explains how Europeans of that time were considering and looking at other races of people such as Africans. The way
