Whole and Part Practice Motor Learning Chpt 18 Skill Complexity and Organization Said to be able to provide the basis for a decision on whether to use either whole or part practice Complexity – the number of components and the amount of information- processing demands that characterize a skill; more complex = more components Organization – the relationships among the components of the skill; high organization = interdependent components; related, work together, could be characterized as a “chain of events,” etc. How to decide : low complexity, low organization (ex. turning on a light switch); low complexity, high organization = whole practice (ex. pushing a button, throwing a dart); high complexity, low organization = part practice (ex. reach, grasp and drink from a cup); in order to make your decision, you must… o 1) Analyze the skill (what are the components and is it interdependent or not?) o 2) Determine which components are in dependent and which ones are
