(3 points) Below are two maps, one showing how Roman soldiers were pronouncing the words for ‘two’, ‘three’, ‘four’ in various parts of the Roman Empire in about 100 B.C. and the other showing how those words are pronounced by people living in the same regions today. 100 B.C. 2010 A.D. YOUR TASK: (a) Find a sentence or part of a sentence in Pinker, pp. 248-249, that accounts for the linguistic UNITY OF LATIN in the Roman period but the DIVERSITY OF THE MODERN ROMANCE LANGUAGES; (b) state very briefly (ONE OR TWO SENTENCES AT MOST!) how Pinker’s more general account applies to the specific case of Latin and the Romance languages. (Answer in the box at the top of the next page.)

Linguistics 1, Assignment 5, p. 2 (a) Pinker, p. 248: “…successful innovations do not take over everywhere but accumulate separately in different groups.” Pinker, p. 249: “…at all times, in all communities, language changes, though the various parts of a language may change in different ways in different communities.” (b) The Roman soldiers all came from the same basic speech community, but once Latin was es- tablished in geographically separated areas, innovations took place in those communities which were not shared elsewhere, i.e. the evolution from Latin to Italian took different directions from that in Lisbon, Madrid, etc. 2. (6 points) Learned vs. innate features of language. Below are some linguistic features of Korean. Check the LEARNED box or the INNATE box depending on whether the feature is something a child born in a Korean-speaking community would have to learn from listening to other Korean speakers or would already “know” because of an innate language instinct. * NOTE : Each feature is characterized by a general statement followed by an example. YOUR CHOICE OF “LEARNED” VS. “INNATE” APPLIES TO THE GENERAL STATEMENT . Obviously, the actual Korean forms in the examples would ALL be “learned”. Features of Korean LEARNED INNATE 1. Korean has words to distinguish between the sister of one’s mother and the sister of one’s father, namely, imo ‘aunt’ (if the sister of one’s mother), komo ‘aunt’ (if the sister of one’s father). ± 2.
