Unformatted text preview: Relativity – Einstein’s postulates 1. The speed of light is the same in all inertial frames of reference 2. The laws of physics are the same in all inertial frames of reference. Newtonian relativity : laws of mechanics must be the same in all inertial frames of reference; Time and Distance Measurements is relative in the theory of relativity. Special Relativity is special because it only applies to inertial frames; checked by thousands of experiments, time dilation and length contraction. Time Dilation – time itself runs at different rates for differently moving objects – don’t notice time dilation effects because effect is too small at these speeds to be noticeable on a watch; Principal of Relativity light clock has to agree with all other kinds of clocks, no matter how fast you are moving; if Lucy and Ringo travel rapidly past each other, each will measure the other’s time slowed down; neither will notice any effect of time dilation in his/her own system; time-slow-down effect gets larger, approaching infinity, as their relative speed approaches speed of light. Spacetime Diagram x(distance) vs. ct(time) General Relativity – theory of gravity as curved space-time; mathematically beautiful theory, checked only by a few classical experiments;...
