Course Information: Life Sciences 1 (Evolution, Ecology & Biodiversity) LS1 Section 1 MWF 12:00 – 12:50 PM; LS1 Section 2 MWF 1:00 – 1:50 PM Instructor: Prof. Allison Alvarado Office Hours: Friday 9:30 – 11:30 AM Schlicter Hall 2847 [email protected] Text: Biological Science by Scott Freeman 4 th ed. (with ACCESS CARD) Two Course Websites: CCLE: http://www.lsic.ucla.edu/classes/winter12/ Mastering Biology: http://www.masteringbio.com/ (Course Name: ALVARADO40196) ENROLLMENT: All questions related to enrollment should be taken to the LS Core office in the Life Sciences building room 2305. You can also e-mail them at the following e-mail address: [email protected] . LECTURES: Lectures will be based on the reading listed in this syllabus. There will be additional examples given in the class that may not be from the text, but are chosen to help in understanding different concepts in the course. Lectures will typically be posted on the course website the night before so that you can print them out and bring them to class if you choose. There will be a reading quiz (see orange blocks on color calendar) administered using Mastering Biology due on Sunday nights by 8 PM; the first quiz is due on the Sunday (Jan 15) before Week 2. These quizzes are based on the upcoming week’s reading. They are only available for a limited time over the weekend (1 PM on Friday until 8 PM on Sunday); you must login and take the quiz before it times out. Reading quizzes are open book but they are timed, and they are designed to help you read the material ahead of time and be prepared for what we will be covering in lecture that week. There will be no reading quiz for the first week’s reading material since the deadline has already passed, or on the Sundays before the midterms. Therefore, NO READING QUIZZES WEEKS 1, 4, & 8! (7 reading quizzes x 10 points each = 70 points = 7% of your grade) There will be a post-lecture homework assignment (see green blocks on color calendar) administered using Mastering Biology after each lecture, which will be due by 8 PM the following day. These will loosely be based on what we covered in lecture that day. They will only be available for a limited time between lectures (1 PM on the day of the lecture to 8 PM the following day); you must login and do the assignment before it times out. Post-lecture homework assignments are NOT timed; however, you can only answer the questions once for credit (e.g. you will not be able to go back and re-do the assignment for a better grade). The first assignment will begin after the first lecture today. There will be no homework assignments due immediately after holidays or midterms. Therefore, NO HW ASSIGNMENTS on MONDAYS of WEEKS 2, 4, 7, & 8! (26 homework assignments x 5 points each = 130 points = 13% of your grade) To summarize, 20% of your grade will come from reading quizzes & homework. These are associated with lecture, but will be done online in Mastering Biology.
