Objectives: • Draw the structure of D-glyceraldehyde, including stereochemistry. • Use Fischer projections to describe the stereochemistry of a chiral center. • Identify the stereochemistry of D- and L- glyceraldehyde (R or S). • Identify D-monosaccharides and L-monosaccharides and explain how they relate to D-glyceraldehyde and L-glyceraldehyde. • Use Fischer projections to describe the stereochemistry of an open-chain monosaccharide. • Identify the differences between a normal sugar and an aminosugar. • Show how open-chain monosaccharides can form cyclic hemiacetals and identify the anomeric carbon.
