Name: _______________________ Acids can be identified by their chemical formulas The chemical formula for an acid will start with hydrogen HNO 3 is nitric acid; H 2 SO 4 is sulfuric acid; HCl is hydrochloric acid; H 3 PO 4 is phosphoric acid Some special acids end with the chemical group –COOH CH 3 COOH is acetic acid Bases can be identified by their chemical formula Most bases end with the hydroxide group (-OH) KOH is potassium hydroxide; NaOH is sodium hydroxide, Ba(OH) 2 is barium hydroxide Ammonia (NH 3 ) is also a base Acids can be identified by their properties When added to water, acids release H + ions into solution Acids taste sour Acids react with metals to produce hydrogen gas Acids dissolved in water will form a solution that conducts electricity
