From this plot it can be seen that there is an optimal free- stream Mach number that will return the highest pressure ratio across the induced shocks in the engine inlet. 1.6 1.7 1.8 1.9 2 2.1 2.2 2.3 2.4 2.5 0.8 0.82 0.84 0.86 0.88 0.9 0.92 0.94 0.96 0.98 1 Diffuser Efficiency vs. Mach Number Mach Number Diffuser Efficiency AOE 4234 November 20, 2009 Test 3 Sossi, Craig 904512344 The above plot shows the diffuser efficiency as a function of Mach number. As with the pressure ratio plot, there is an optimum free-stream Mach number for the greatest diffuser efficiency. If the diffuser efficiency is high, the turbofan engine will thus be efficient. 1.6 1.7 1.8 1.9 2 2.1 2.2 2.3 2.4 2.5 1.15 1.2 1.25 1.3 1.35 1.4 1.45 1.5 Specific Thrust vs. Mach Number Mach Number T/ma As the inlet Mach number increases, the specific thrust produced by the turbofan decreases. This is because as the inlet Mach number increases, the diffuser becomes less efficient, in turn making the turbofan engine less efficient. 1.6 1.7 1.8 1.9 2 2.1 2.2 2.3 2.4 2.5 0.01 0.0105 0.011 0.0115 0.012 0.0125 0.013 0.0135 0.014 0.0145 0.015 Thrust Specific Fuel Consumption vs. Mach Number Mach Number TSFC As the Mach number increases in the inlet, the turbofan engine becomes more efficient....
