Cover Letter Jeremiah Gordon In my essay I analyze the methods that Stanley Hilton and Alex Jones use to try and persuade readers that 9/11 was an inside job carried out by George Bush. Mr. Hilton and Mr. Jones use a wide range of methods to grab the reader’s attention. These methods include various tropes and persuasive appeals. “Asleep” is the most common trope while “ethos” is the most heavily used when it comes to appeals. Throughout my paper I try to explain why the tropes were used how they are effective and who they target. Overall I think I do a pretty good job of staying on track but a few times I may go a bit off topic. Another part of my paper that I think could use some improvement is my usage of examples to help prove my ideas. I think for some ideas I need more examples or details to help the reader understand my ideas better. The easiest parts of the essay was finding the tropes and the persuasive appeals, but explaining them and providing examples of each trope was the hardest part for me. The strongest part of my paper was my opening and closing paragraphs. I think I did a good job of stating my thesis sentence clearly and using that to lead to my broader ideas. In the future papers I need to start to focus on backing up my ideas with better examples to help the reader understand what ideas I am trying to portray. Jeremiah Gordon

English 111 Andrew Buchner 8/3/2011 Bush was Responsible for 9/11 Bush authorized 9/11. He knew the whole time and maybe even orchestrated the whole event. An unimaginable amount of ideas and explanations have surfaced on how 9/11 was an inside job and how the government, mainly Bush knew about the attacks the whole time. Such a drastic and devastating event shocked and confused millions of people, opening the door for the conspiracy theories to come rushing in and provide people with explanations that could possibly lead to closure or someone to blame the event on. In this specific piece of conspiracy work, an interview between the well-known Alex Jones and Stanley Hilton, a senior advisor to Bob Dole, the thoughts on what really happened during 9/11 are conveyed. Mr. Hilton essentially believes that Bush planned the 9/11 attacks in order to justify sending troops to the Middle East to carry out his duties. Undercover FBI and CIA agents hijacked the planes; they also had microchips in the noses of the planes so they could be controlled from the ground. Just like any other conspiracy theory that is grabbing to individuals of all backgrounds, a vast array of examples and allusions are used to provide support for the theory. Throughout Mr. Hilton’s interview, attention grabbing methods are used to try and persuade readers that his ideas are not just theories. The trope that is most prevalent is the

“asleep” trope. Clearly Mr. Hilton is claiming that the information being fed to them is straight lies and the government is hiding what really happened from the American people. Mr. Hilton does a great job of making the reader believe that if one believes what
