Throsymachus -Says justice is the advantage of the stronger What is Justice? distribution of power among men and women equally truth, giving back what you know responsibility for your actions Justice is a state of character (virtues) Various meanings of Justice unjust man is lawless-material possessions law abiding man is just TYPES of Justice 1. Procedural justice 2. Distributive 3. Punitive (punishment) New definition of Justice -you may owe debt of repayment, but you may not if there are injurious consequences doing good to our friends, harm to our enemies Socrates says Justice is a tri-partite system 3 Classes of People in City 1. Guardians-philosopher, kings, wisest members of society 2. Auxiliaries-soldiers, enforcers of law and order 3. Merchants/Farmers-everyday people So justice is knowing your role in society. Soul has three parts, logos(wise), thymos(courage), eros(passion). Virtues represent the three classes of the city. Must be in exact order to function.
