MGT 356 Mid-Term #1 Study Guide Definitions/Distinctions Employee Rights vs. Employee Benefits: Right – right for meaningful work, due process, notice of closure Benefit – Something given to employees that they are not necessarily entitled to. These thing include child care, health insurance, severance pay, etc. Historical vs. End-Result Theories: Historical – Distribution is just depending on how it came about. End-Result – Snapshot; decide whether it’s moral based on a structural principle. Patterned vs. Unpatterned Principles: Patterned – Rectify a wrong by taking from one side and giving it to the other. Unpatterned – Constant Flux; ever-changing; not agreeable with the end-result because it does not agree with taking snapshots. Utilitarian vs. Rights Justification of Capitalism: Utilitarianism – Capitalism is the economic system that best maximizes the common good. Rights – Capitalism is the only economic system that respects fundamental human rights, such as property rights and freedom of association.
