BISC 104: Introduction to the Scientific Method II Now that you have conducted your people-watching experiments, you should have data from each of your group members. Today we are going to compile the data, sorting it into groups according to the independent variable(s), and then calculating the mean and standard deviation (if applicable) of the dependent variable. You should graph your results with the independent variable on the x-axis and the dependent variable on the y-axis. If you calculated the standard deviation, you should include error bars. For example, let’s say that our hypothesis was that more people would be seen eating bananas than apples during breakfast in the dining hall, as measured by three people on different mornings. The data are as follows: The mean, or average number of apples is (124+150+116)/3=130, while the average number of bananas is (360+315+345)/3=340. The standard deviation can be found by measuring the distance each data point was from the mean, squaring each value, taking the modified average of this value, and then taking the square root of the whole thing. For example, for apples: Data point Mean-Data Value^2 124 130-124= 6 36 150 130-150= -20 400 116 130-116= 14 196 The adjusted average of these values is called the variance; what we mean by adjusted is that instead of
