MATH 1131 3.0 - Fall 2011 Assignment 1 (Due Date: September 28, 2011) (only hand in the * questions) Question 1 * : At the PISA Web site (www.pisa.oecd.org), there are summary statistics for math scores of 15-year-old males and females separately. The mean math scores for males, the mean math scores for females, and also the difference of the two means are listed in the Excel file. a. Report the 5-number summaries for male scores and female scores. b. Use a graphical presentation that you have learned in the course to compare per- formance of male and female students. Based on the graph, do they have similar performances? Why or why not? c. Which countries’ male scores can be considered as “outliers”? Why? Justify it. d. Are the variations of the male scores and female scores more or less the same? Why? Justify it. e. Obtain the boxplot for the difference of the two means. Based on the plot, can you say males scores are, in general, higher than female scores? Question 2: The homicide rate per 100000 residents for 18 of the biggest Canadian and US cites are recorded in the Excel file. a. Report the 5-number summaries for the homicide rate.
