Morgan Bailey Mb33295 Lab 4 Discussion In this lab, we experienced the relative rates of the free radical chain bromination of many different arenes. The chemicals we used ranged from toluene to methyl cyclohexane. We also had a control test tube in there also. We analyzed how long is took each to form a reaction once we added a chemical to its test tube. We had 2 test tubes for each hydrocarbon, 1 in light and 1 without light. The mechanistic step which involves the absorption of a hydrogen atom by bromine determines which product will be prepared. I believe what this experiment was seeking to prove was chemicals with larger substrates, like tertbutylbenzene will take longer to react and chemicals with smaller substrates, like toluene and ethyl benzene will react faster. It also has to do with the types of hydrogen atoms of the hydrocarbon, like tert-butyl benzene contains tertiary hydrogens on its substrate group, while ethyl benzene has only a primary hydrogen on its substrate group, so we noticed that it reacted a lot
