SPMD A&P 1-10-12 ANATOMY “Ana” means up “Tome” means cutting (literally cutting up) Cytology and histology – micro x-ray: shadowy negative of internal structures -provide 2D image Ultrasound: developed right after WWII using sonar -computer analyze sound waves that bounce off of internal structures. -computer creates sonogram: visual interpretation of sound waves -BABIES!!! CT SCAN: computer analyzed XRAYS -360 deg view -a thin cross-section (ie loaf of bread sliced) -stack multiple cross sections and get 3D image LEVELS OF BODY ORG. 1. chemical: interaction of atoms to form molecules 2. cell: basic structural and functional unit of life 3. tissue: groups of similar cells and their surrounding materials that work together to perform a particular function 4. organ: 2 or more types of tissues functioning together 5. organ system: group of organs performing a common function or set of functions; viewed as unit. 6. organism: any living thing considered as a whole.
