Problem 3 Diphenhydramine is a commonly-used antihistamine drug. It is usually administered as the hydrochloride salt. In various portions of your digestive tract, the drug may be present either as the free base (B) or as its conjugate acid (BH + ), depending on the pH. Transport of the drug through the body to the appropriate receptor involves at some point the transfer of the drug through a non-polar lipid membrane. Since the protonated form (BH + ) is charged, it will not dissolve significantly in a non-polar medium. Therefore, only the free base (B) can dissolve and be transported across a lipid layer.
