Chemistry 105 Notes Chapter 1 Atoms - Submicroscopic particles Molecules -two or more atoms joined in a specific geometrical arrangement CHEMISTRY – Science that seeks to understand the behavior of mater by studying the behavior of atoms and molecules. Hypothesis – tentative explanation of the observations Experiments – highly controlled procedures designed to generate observations Scientific law – a brief statement that summarizes past observations and predicts future ones Law of Conservation of Mass – In a chemical reaction, matter is neither created nor destroyed Theory – one or more well-established hypotheses may form the basis for a scientific theory Scientific Method – Ask a question, Background research, construct hypothesis, Experiment, Analyze/conclusion, communicate results Matter – anything that occupies space and has mass Substance – specific instance of matter State – physical form Composition – basic components that make it up Solid – atoms or molecules pack close to each other in fixed locations. Crystalline
