Communication 101 -After Exam 1 up until Exam 2 Notes- - WHAT IS THE POINT OF THE TELEPHONE GAME? o The process of receiving information is a complex one Need to hear it, pay attention to it, understand it, and remember it When we receive information we need to  actively  do so - INFORMATION RECEPTION IS… o Active and complex o Difficult to retain for long periods of time (memory) Possible to retain and remember with  practice With practice you can actually remember things with long periods of  time Need to do this so that we can remember information that is  important to us o We put effort into this process - INFORMATION RECEPTION PROCESS  (3 steps) o Information Selection     We select certain messages and disregard others We hear messages all the time, but we choose to pay attention/listen  to certain ones We employ  selective attention We attend to messages and select certain ones o Interpreting Information     Assigning meaning or significance to selected messages o Retention of the Information     Involves storing and actively using this information in the future Recall  - deliberate process of retrieving a remembered information;  ACTIVELY trying to remember something
