General Chemistry laboratory, Chem18/19 Experiment # 11 Title: Qualitative analysis: precipitation reactions and solubility 1. Transfer 1.0 mL of water to 10x75 mm test tube to calibrate. Mark 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 mL marks. 2. Clean & rinse 2 clear-plastic spot plates. Transfer 2 mL of 8 aqueous solutions into 8 3 mL test tubes. 3. Arrange plates (in manual) and put 6 drops of NaOH solution in the 7 wells of first row. Add 6 drops of other seven solutions to each well of NaOH. Observe precipitate color. Put 6 drops of NH 4 I solution into 6 wells in second row and add 6 drops of remaining 6 solutions to each well. Repeat with 5 samples BaCl 2 , 4 samples MgSO 4 , 3 samples KIO 3 , 2 samples AgNO 3 , and Na 2 CO 3 with HNO 3 . 4. Check with TA. Add 6 drops 1M HNO 3 to each precipitate. Check for additional reactions and mark with asterisk. Write gas if gas is produced. Add 6 drops nitric acid to KIO 3 and NH 3 I. Dump solutions into waste, clean plates with tap then distilled H 2 O.

Put 0.5 mL of each solution from test tubes to 4 other test tubes. 3. Add 0.5 mL of 6M KNO 2 and 4 drops of 6M acetic acid to each portion. Observe color and precipitate formation. 4. Repeat step 2 with addition of 0.5 mL 6M NH 3 to each tube. Observe color and precipitate formation. 4. Repeat step 2 with addition of 1 drop 6M NH 3 followed by 0.5 mL 1% HDMG in each test tube. Observe. 5. Repeat step 2 with addition of 0.5 mL 1.0M KI. Record chemical changes. 6. Empty iodide mixtures into 400-mL waste beaker then to waste container in hood. Put used Pasteur pipets into broken glass waste, rinse test tubes with tap then distilled water. Put in used test tubes beaker. 7.
