With = -V , we have V / x = -2 α x + γ z , V / y = β , V / z = γ x , so = (2 α x – γ z) – β γ x . 2. a) If a parallel-plate capacitor has a 0.15mm plate separation, what must its area be for it to have a capacitance of 1.0F ? For a parallel-plate capacitor, C = ε o A / s , where A is the area of the plate and s is their separation. From this the area is found to be A = C s / ε o = 1.69x10 7 m 2 . b) If the plates are square, what is the length of their sides? The length of the sides would be L = A 1/2 = 4117m = 2.56 miles ! This gives an idea about what a large capacitance 1F is. 3. A parallel-plate capacitor has a capacitance of 2.0 μ F and a plate separation of 1.6mm . a)
