Papaila, 1 In response to a shooting at a local mall,  The Tennessean  featured 4 articles  concerning Nashville’s gang situation last July.  Kate Howard-the staff writer that wrote  the majority of the articles-covered a “gang-related” shooting, coupling it with  information about the many gangs that exist within the Nashville community. After  implying that the shooting was in fact gang related, the writers misleadingly presented  the gang problem as a very precarious threat to the integrity and safety of their society.  The aggressive progression of the gang-related subjects the authors disclosed, along with  the differences of style and sources they employed revealed how the authors intentionally  aimed to spark interest in an otherwise controlled social problem of society.  July 15 th , 2006, a young man rumored to be a gang member, shot a gun in the  Opry Mills Mall.  The bullet wounded two men: Jackson Hoskin, 23, and Lewis Perkins,  15.  The suspected gunman, Keairus Wilson, 17, turned himself in a week after the  incident.  The shooting prompted safety concerns in Opry Mills mall and throughout the  Nashville area.  Torres and Ward were the first to cover the story for  The Tennessean recapping the night with accounts from mall employees and witnesses.  They also  included information from police spokesman Don Aaron, who commented on the  shooting and the Metro police’s “Operation Safer Streets” program already underway to  prevent gang-related violence.  Howard’s first article mentions the shooting with an

Papaila, 2 assurance of it being gang-related, embellishing the rest of the article with details of past  crime and the law efforts at the local area malls. Howard’s article “Nashville’s gang are  transient, police say” feeds off the gang interest stimulated by the shooting, providing an  informational article about the metro area gang situation and touches on some of the gang  unit’s interaction/knowledge of the gang community over the past two years.  Howard’s
