Petruccio and Kate Response Scene 2.1 From the perspective of each actor, I would imagine that it would be incredibly difficult to rehearse alone and only perform together. The banter between Petruccio and Kate is so witty that the delivery must be fast-paced in order to be clever. There are only a few instances in their meeting when the dialogue extends beyond a line or two. This would make it especially difficult to predict when a given actor is required to deliver a line or when to anticipate a new character entering the scene. Another difficulty associated with this method of rehearsing is that the actors cannot know how the rest of the cast will interpret a scene. Petruccio and Kate’s repartee can be interpreted in a number of different ways, all of which have different implications for the entirety of the play. The scene (which is of particular importance, as it is the first meeting of the two most central characters) can be read as flirtatious, argumentative or standoffish. Interpretations vary
