Red wine is often singled out as the best choice of all alcoholic beverages because it is a rich source of various polyphenols, antioxidants that tend to neutralize and prevent the damaging effects of free radicals, which derive from the grape skins as the wine is fermented (5). Studies have shown that a moderate consumption of roughly two drinks per week can lead to a reduced risk of sudden cardiac death in humans (1).
