VEN 3 Lecture 16 Announcements: Quiz : Today, Thursday, May 19 Previous Lecture: The last lecture was about the wines of Spain and Portugal. We learned about regions like Rioja, and particular types of wine we focused on were Cava, Sherry, and Port. Wines of Italy and Germany I. Italy A. Second largest wine producer B. Largest exporter to the U.S. C. Old D. Divers – Regions are historically isolated 1. Isolated from international trade until recently II. Appellation System A. DOC – Denominazione de Origine Controllata (Controlled appellation of origin) 1. Lines drawn around regions making typical wines 2. Compared to the French AOC system where lines are drawn around regions making good wines B. DOCG – Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (Controlled and guaranteed) 1. Reserved for wines of particular distinction 2. Italian appellation system is not hierarchical C. Wine Law of Italy 1. Permits regional and vineyard appellations 2. Permits hierarchical structure 3. Few changes so far D. IGT – Indicazione Geografica Tipica 1. Compared to French Vin de Pays 2. Includes many previous Vini di Tavola
