PSYCHOLOGY AND HEALTH PROBLEMS 2 Psychology and Health Problems Abstract This paper will examine and illustrate the multi-factorial model and how it relates to the diagnosis of illnesses. The multi-factorial model will be examined by looking at the following factors: biological, environmental, behavioral, stressors, personality, and socio-cultural . Additionally, this paper will deal with what role psychology has played in understanding and managing these health problems.

PSYCHOLOGY AND HEALTH PROBLEMS 3 The Multi-factorial Model The multi-factorial model shows a wide range of factors that establish our health and susceptibility to sickness. There are six main factors that affect us; these factors are biological, Socio-cultural, Personality, Stressors, Behavior, and Environmental factors. The Biological factors are based on our family history, age, gender, race, and health history. The Socio-cultural factors are based on socioeconomic status, family situation, and other health- related cultural religious practices or legislation. Personality factors can play a large role in how we react to stress and everything else. Some of these personality factors are psychological conflict, psychological hardness, and your health locus of control. Stressor factors are your daily life hassles, (such as paying bills and running errands) major life changes, and even your daily work environment. The Behavioral factors include your diet, sleep patterns, and your social skills. Finally, Environmental factors, which are vehicular safety, pollution, and natural disasters. These are just some of the sub-factors to each main factor; however, this should give you an idea of what may affect you daily on a daily basis.
